Applying For Teaching Positions...

...is no fun. It's a lot of work. Not that I mind work, but things have sure changed since I had my first teaching position. Five years ago, one would just send in a paper resume, cover letter, references and transcripts. Now, things have changed. Instead, you scan all your docs, upload them to school sites, and on. and on. and on....

Not that I mind saving a tree and postage. It's just much more complicated. I've been to Copy Max three times today (and have to go back again tonight) just to get four pieces of paper scanned so I can upload them. I miss just putting a bunch of stuff into an envelope and sending. Oh well - if I get an interview, it will be worth it.

But, the other part that is hard now (and wasn't then) was searching for open jobs. Five years ago, I could spend hours looking for positions and filling out online applications. Not so with three kids. It takes me about 4 hours to fill out one online application. And, just searching for the open position is a task in itself. I tell you, finding a job is like having a job. If only I was getting paid.

I also am planning on attending the Educators Fair in MN this year, for the first time ever. I have always been a bit skeptical of teacher fairs, but I keep hearing Erin and Laura's description of the one they went to four or five years ago, when the Virginia (state) reps told them they'd take 'em all!!! I hope you are right :)

And, I have an interview in Mpls this weekend for a position in....Las Vegas. Wow. I don't know about that, but after some of what I have read on Social Studies Teacher chat rooms, I think I should feel fortunate just to have a job interview!

Also, to my teacher friends out there, I ask a favor: click on "Social Studies Central" in my links list. I created that as a website/info center to show potential employers...but how do you think I can market it? Ask your husbands, ask your friends. How do I put that on a resume?

Hey Andrea.
You're working so hard at this - An employer will surely recognize your talent and motivation. I think the Social Studies Central blog is great. You could either tell prospective employers about it in an interview or include it on your resume, maybe, underneath your e-mail address or something. It could help you stand apart. It shows that you've already thought of a way to use technology in the classroom...

Good luck, and nice work!
